Diary Entries

Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Location: Bath, England

The last full day. A trip to Lydford gorge was good, but wet at times.
We saw some of the places that the Harry Potter movies used-the cloisters at Lacock Abbey. Finally, a walk around Bath.
Tomorrow we will go to the Roman Baths before making our way to the airport for the trip home.

Monday, 09 July 2007

An excellent day. Although the day began with rain by the time we reached Tintagel Castle it was fine. The Castle is a ruin, and actually not very important or interesting-the views of the Atlantic Ocean that you get are something else. We spent two hours exploring it.
The next stop was St. Michael's Mount, which was also spectacular. We got there by boat because it was high tide, we went later when it was low tide, and was able to walk across the same area. Note you see a picture of this, but not of the other view-this computer isn't accepting my 1gig card, but it is happy to read the 128mb.
The last stop was Land's End, the most SW part of Britain. We went to the Dr Who display which was quite good.

Sunday, 08 July 2007

Location: Exeter, England

A ferry ride and a train trip got us to Southampton. The £&*! up with the hire car continued-yes we had a confirmation of a mondeo wagon, but no they didn't have one. We ended up with a weird, but functional car-a citroen picasso, the bags fitted, with a push.
Stonehenge was the main attraction of the day, and obviously many people thought the same thing, and the morning was sunny. We have mostly met some very good fellow travellers, unfortunately they were thin on the ground at Stonehenge, where rudeness and not obeying the site signs were rampant.
Still Stonehenge was good, a marvellous display-how did they build it? Pictures to follow, as this computer has a fit every time it tries to read my card-either via the camera or a card reader.

Saturday, 07 July 2007

Location: Isle of Wight, England

Another easy day. Posted 11.5 kg worth of clothes home-cost a fortune, but still less than excess baggage on the plane would have cost I think. The girls went to the theme Park of Black gang Chine. A relaxing day. May have sorted out a car rental problem-will have to wait until tomorrow.
Had a very nice dinner at the Wishing well pub with Pat, Daniel, Kevin, Rachel, Jordan and Thomas. Photos will be posted when I find a computer that works a bit better than this one( at the YHA).
Went to an impressive fireworks display, the locals didn't think so, but it was a little better than Narrabri's usual effort.

Friday, 06 July 2007

Location: Isle of Wight, England

A sleep in! Leisurely day with relaives. Did go to Carisbrook Castle, which was one of the better ones we had seen. Pub late lunch and fish and chips for tea-what more could you want?

Thursday, 05 July 2007

Location: Isle of Wight, England

Went to the Ann Hathaway's cottage to start the day-very old and impressive, with lovely gardens. The rest of the day was travel, and quite a bit of changing transport. It rained as we got to the Island, unfortunately.

Wednesday, 04 July 2007

Location: Stratford upon Avon, England

This day up for the previously disappointing two. Kennilworth Castle, whilst a ruin was well layed out and very interesting. Warwick Castle was the next stop, for half a day. Great castle, great shows, thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The B & B we stopped at was in the centre of town, so we went for some walks. Didn't manage to snag any tickets to the RSC production of Macbeth.

Tuesday, 03 July 2007

Location: Doncaster?, England

We ended up at Doncaster not Stainforth, actually we did get to Stainforth, and then we discovered that there were two towns of this name within 140km of each other!
A visit to Carlisle Castle was the first stop. We then drove through the lakes district, which was nice, but as good as anticipated. Finding a place to stop and take a photo was almost impossible.
Visited Wordsworth's home on the way through the Lakes.

Monday, 02 July 2007

Location: Kielder, England

Went on a really good cruise off oBan to see some seals and their pups-very nice. The next stop was Stirling Castle, which we found it very difficult to locate the car park. The Castle was good, particularly the weapons/armour demonstrion.
A long drive to Kielder, which is in the middle of a very large man made forest.

Sunday, 01 July 2007

Location: Oban, Scotland

We didn't go directly to Oban, we took a detour to see the famous Eilean Donan Castle. Glad I had the GPS as there aren't that many signposts in the UK, until you get to your destination. The Castle was spectactular, and the photos turned out pretty good.
Just before Oban we went to Dunstaffgne Castle which was small, but okay. The Hostel in Oban is acroos the road from the Harbour, with spectatcular views. A bit rainy though.

Saturday, 30 June 2007

Location: Culrain, Scotland

Blue shy and sun greeted us in the morning-a very rare sight of late. We drove 2/3 of the way around Loch Ness, without seeing the beastie. We discovered B roads = one lane, very narrow, passing places and very fast drivers. a hairy experience. We stpped at Foyer's falls on the way.
Carbisdale Castle was our final destination. It was very nice-statues, paintings all overthe place, and quite a big room. Went for a naure walk-not so great as the area had been logged and had suffered in storms-so we got a bit lost, but made it back, eventually.

Friday, 29 June 2007

Location: Aviemore, Scotland

A two and a half hour train ride from Edinburgh to Inverness. We picked up the hire car from here-not the proper car whicj I had booked, a Vauxhaul Astra. Everything just fitted in and we set of for the site of the Battle of Culloden. Not one of the Scots best strategic decisions. Also went to some of the tumulus stone graves nearby.
Aviemore is small and quiet, but very pleasant. Went for a nice nature walk near the Hostel.

Thursday, 28 June 2007

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

What a day! An early start from York got us to Alnmouth-we then went to Alnwick(pronounced Anick) Castle, where some of Harry Potter was shot. Quite a bit of luggage moving, but I will say no more, otherwisw the nightmares will return.
Got onto Edinburgh and went to the Castle and the Dungeons, which were overpriced, but fun.

Wednesday, 27 June 2007

Location: York, England

A bit of a frustrating day with transport! We did get away from Cambridge-late, as Dinos spent half an hour in a que waiting to talk to a Brit rail person. As result of stoppages for the last two days the trains were packed, and delayed. All up we lost about 2 hours. Still we got into sunny York-it was sunny and warm between 6.25pm and 6.41 pm. Apart from that it was freezing at times, I am not joking. A pity because York looks really nice, as some of the pictures show-they also indicate some of the flooding, which in this town wasn't that bad.
Went to the Jorvik museum of Viking history-very cool, no pictures allowed though. Also went to Clifford tower for a great view. This tower dates back to William the Conquerer.

Tuesday, 26 June 2007

Location: Cambridge, England

A day trip to Ely and Peterborough.
we may get another day in Cambridge as the service by road and rail is cut to York.

Monday, 25 June 2007

Location: Cambridge, England

A day at home to see relatives-Uncle Reg and Aunt Hazel. Some retail therapy in the afternoon.

Sunday, 24 June 2007

Location: Cambridge, England

A family day -the weather hasn't been good.
Did catch up with lots of relatives. Keith and Mahala in the morning, Robin and Angela, and Neil in the afternoon. Jamie and Mikayla at night. If this is summer...........

Saturday, 23 June 2007

Location: Cambridge, England

A lazy start to the day-the first for a long time. We went for a walk around the colleges, it was a bit wet at times, but we decided to brave a punt down the Cam. This went well for quite a while, very scenic and beautiful. The fleeing of the ducks should have warned us of a change in the weather- we got absolutely drenched in the second part of the trip. Currently having a beer with relatives(and using their internet connection!)

Friday, 22 June 2007

Location: Cambridge, England

We left from Paris and said our goodbyes to the tour group in London. The next stop was an express train to Cambridge to stay with Aunt Win. The weather was a bit unpredictable.

Thursday, 21 June 2007

Location: Paris, France

We started the day with an orientation tour of the city. Versailles was the first major stop. The gardens were very impressive, as was the building itself. We went for a walk down the Champs Elysee to the Arc de Triomphe. Hot weather continued.

Wednesday, 20 June 2007

Location: Paris, France

Our first day on Paris saw us go to the Eiffel tower, the second story. Great views of Paris! We had earlier visited the Notre Dam cathedral-pretty impressive, but not as much as St Peters.

Tuesday, 19 June 2007

Location: Lyon, France

The two places of note we visited were Cannes and Avignon

Monday, 18 June 2007

Location: Nice, France

We visited the medival town of St. Paul de Vance, which was 30 minutes from Nice. It was small, but still preserved the facade of a middle ages town.
We had a look at the beach, the pebbles were not to our liking. Had lunch at a small cafe, crepes-salmon, ham, potato, cheese etc

Sunday, 17 June 2007

Location: Nice, France

Today we visited Pisa to see the famous leaning tower. It is certaily not straight, but apparently it has been straightened a bit, but not too much otherwise no one would visit. Monte Carlo was our next stop. Dinos went to the Grand Casino and spent a penny, for free. We arrived in Nice and had to move a car off the road(bounce and lift, don't know where the owner was) to allow the bus to get down the street.

Saturday, 16 June 2007

Location: Florence, Italy

Florence was the stop for the day, a beautiful and old city. Got a great view from the lookout. Spent some money on leather goods(wallets etc)

Friday, 15 June 2007

Location: Sorrent, Italy

The highlight of the day was the visit to Pompeii. Whilst we didn't spend long there it was great. Got a nice view of Vesuvius from our hotel. Took a scary drive down the Amalfi coast-the roads are so small and windy-the Scooter riders attempt kamikaze moves all the time. Had some afternoon tea at a mozarella farm-anti pasto and vino, all homegrown. The tomatoes were the best tasting ever.

Thursday, 14 June 2007

Location: Rome, Italy

Our second day in Rome was very hot. We went to the Vatican, saw the museum, St Peters and the Sistine chapel-not bad, actually pretty awesome. Next we went to the Colosseum and spent several hours walking around. Lastly we took a quick look at Constantine's and Titus' arches, and a quick squiz at the forum.

Wednesday, 13 June 2007

Location: Rome, Italy

We began our trip to Rome. Went to the Trevi fountain and the Pantheon. Had a typical Italian multi course meal of Pasta, Salmon etc and plenty of Vino Roso(Red) and Frescarti(white)

Tuesday, 12 June 2007

Location: Venice-Burano, Italy

Spent the morning shopping and viewing the glass blowing display-this time we didnt soend the money. The lunch was fantastic, seafood risotto, garlic mussell spaghetti, sole and dory, as much white wine as you could drink. The tiny island was quite beautiful.

Monday, 11 June 2007

Location: Italy

Lunch was spent in Verona. We visited Juliets(cant find the apostrophe key on this keyboard) balcony, but did not grope Juliets statue, which is a custom.
We went to Venice and had a gondola cruise which was very pleasant(including champers).

Sunday, 10 June 2007

Location: Austria

We went to Austria via Lichtenstein. We spent the afternoon in Innsbruck and made some purchases at the Swarovski crystal shop.

Saturday, 09 June 2007

Location: Lucerne, Switzerland

A cruise into Lucerne was a highlight of the day. We went to a traditional Swiss luncheon, complete with yodelling, flag tossing and Bratwurst with fried grated potatoes. Quite a bit of retail therapy happened-oh well we had been good up until now. We thought about buying a cuckoo clock 18 years ago in Switzerland, we didnt then, but we have now!

Sorry about the lack of photos, I have been unsuccessfully trying for a while. Internet access is NOT that easy to come by, or use reliably.

Friday, 08 June 2007

Location: Giswil-near Lucerne, Switzerland

A short drive to Heidelberg enabled us to climb to the top of the Castle for a glorious view. There were many old, yet attractive houses.
We are staying at a Swiss chalet in the countrzside with stunning views. Before dinner we went on a cart ride to a local farm to try out some wine and pastries.

Thursday, 07 June 2007

Location: Rhineland, Germany

The morning stop at Cologne was a highlight..that Cathedral is so big. The Rhine cruise from Boppard was also very nice.

Wednesday, 06 June 2007

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands

An early start to a long day, which included a ferry trip across the channel. Amsterdam was okay, but not somewhere we would return to quickly.

Tuesday, 05 June 2007

Location: London, UK

We began the day with a trip to Kensington Palace. Very prim, proper and posh. The next stop was the museum of Natural History.. those dinosaurs were certainly big. A quick trip across London enabled us to spend many hours at the British Museum. The day ended with the girls ice skating, with Dinos not being brave enough.

Monday, 04 June 2007

Location: London, UK

A late start to the day due to some chores needing to be done. The girls and Dinos went to 221B Baker Street to see the Sherlock Holmes museum. The next stop was the Tower bridge. After that we went to the Globe-sorry no photos as the cast were practicing, which was pretty cool to watch. The 30 minute trip on the London Eye ended the day.
EDIT-How did I forget, we went to Upton Park, home of West Ham Unted. We intended to visit the museum which shut down a while back, so we spent lots in the supporters shop.

Sunday, 03 June 2007

Location: UK

An early morning flight got us to the UK by mid morning. The weather was sunny and hot-really. We went on a canal cruise and then to the Tower of London. At 7pm we turned up for the Jack the Ripper tour to find out the guide was sick, but another guide had been paid by a French TV company, so he needed a crowd-we went for free.

Saturday, 02 June 2007

Location: Greece

We went on a day cruise around the Saronic Gulf - the islands of Poros, Hydra and Aegina. Great day! Fantastic views, and not too hot.

Friday, 01 June 2007

Location: Athens, Greece

An early flight to Athens. After booking into the hotel we walked to the Acropolis, which was at the top of the road. We went to the ancient theatre, the Parthenon and walked around the agora.

Thursday, 31 May 2007

Location: Cyprus

A slower day. We went shopping in the morning, and swimming in the afternoon. We went out for a family dinner of meze.

Wednesday, 30 May 2007

Location: Kyrenia, Cyprus

We crossed into the Turkish north of the island at the Nicosia checkpoint. Kyrenia looked so beautiful, and the castle was big. Our Uncle Andreas took us, and showed us the house where Dinos' father grew up. It was quite a moving day.

Tuesday, 29 May 2007

Location: Paphos, Cyprus

We went on a trip to Paphos-about an hour to the East. We went to the Tombs of the Kings-which was a burial place for the nobles, not the Kings. Paphos castle gave us some impressive views, as did the spectactular Roman mosaics nearby.

Monday, 28 May 2007

Location: Limassol, Cyprus

The day began with a visit to some of the Ancient monumnets in the area. The afternoon was spent at a Cypriot annual festival for the town of Kyrenia.

Sunday, 27 May 2007

Location: Limassol, Cyprus

We arrive mid morning in Larnaca and will be met by our relatives - Auny Maria and Uncle Sortiris.
We have the best part of 5 days on the island.
Apart from catching up with family members we hope to visit Kolossi Castle and take in some of the beaches around the Limassol area. A trip to the "occupied" North of the island to visit the town of Kyrenia , where Dinos' father grew up is planned. Until the last couple of years this was not allowed. Dinos' father has not been (able) to visit his home town since he left Cyprus on his 21st birthday in 1961.

Saturday, 26 May 2007

Location: Narrabri, Australia

An early morning flight from Narrabri to Sydney began our trip. The flight went well, and the girls think that this is the only way to travel to Sydney. We had a lovely time with the Ramptons, before a 9.15 p.m. flight to Dubai-then on to Larnaca, Cyprus.
