California Dreaming Travel Log

Welcome to the Glovers Travel Page. Here is where we will be keeping a record of our travels around the west coast of America. Please feel free to leave a comment for us. If we have time in between discovering new places and meeting new people we will reply to them. In the words of the Mamas and Papas, all the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I've been for a walk on a winter's day ( in Vermont South )
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A

Connie did some research last night about doing a Warner Bros tour. So, when we got up this morning I rang and booked us seats on a 9.30am tour prior to breakfast. Due to traffic, we made it just after 9. What a great tour, 10 of us and a guide. We got close up and personal with lots of the sets and costumes from various productions. Harry Potter was a big one. The girls (including Connie) loved seeing the Friends set, Central Perk, at is was on tv. We saw the car museum, Gran Torino, Batman, Austin Powers, Get Smart, Dukes of Hazard and many more. Loved it. Ellen drove past us in her Black Porsche, wound down the window and said Hi as she was on her way somewhere. All in all a really good 2 1/2 hours well spent. Drove down to the Chinese Theatre for a look, lunch at Hard Rock, took pictures of the Hollywood sign. Went to Madame Tusauds, not sure who had more fun, Connie or the girls. Walked along the Walk of Fame, checked out the stars, got hassled by all the people trying to sell us bus tickets to see the stars homes.
Dropped in to Rodeo drive and had coffee and cheesecake, checked out some shops, too rich for my blood. It was getting dark and we decided to drive up the Hollywood hills, Mulholland dr. Saw the city lights from up on the hill, nice.
This is our last entry as we leave tomorrow night, drop the beloved van off at 6, on the plane at 10pm.
I'll add a few points of interest for future travellers.
Everyone should drive the West coast of America at least once in their life.
Every 10th car on the road is a Mustang.
When driving LHD , remember "Tight Right" &"Long Left"
Majority of people you meet have really good manners, customer service is paramount.
Even though the drivers drive really fast and over the limit most of the time, they all make room for each on the road.
Tipping is weird to start with, but it is not a big deal, you soon learned who gets the money and who dosen't.
Try everything, peanut and jelly pizza is pretty good.
Must have a Cam Chowder in San Fransisco,Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory, Sundae from Ghiradelli's, Bagel with Creamcheese, Pretzel, Turkey Leg, Twinkies.
Watch out for Happy Hours, 50% off food and drink.
Don't use an Amex Travel Card, cash is the way to go.

Nice and warm this morning in Santa Monica, had to break out the shorts again. Charlotte had seen a bicycle hire shop on the way in last night, so we checked in out after a coffee or two. We picked a four wheeled, four sets of pedals, two bench seated, canvassed roofed, double Surrey. I took control of this contraption complete with steering wheel and disc brakes. We sped along the bike track at walking pace, checking out the beach and the boats. An hour was enough so we handed it back and checked out the shopping district. All very Spanish, lots of white rendered buildings and terra cotta tiles. Found a fountain complete with live turtles. Headed for the freeway and set sail for Hollywood around midday. Hour and a half drive, easy. Girls really want to have a swim, so as soon as we found the hotel, we broke out the togs. Had an early dinner at the Saddle Ranch across the road. The is one of the places that has a bucking bull as a centre piece in the restaurant, due to happy hour 50% off the bill. So, we all ate and drank for 21 bucks, nice. Drove down to Santa Monica pier and saw the ferris wheel, etc. Grabbed an ice cream just off Santa Monica Bvd, then headed back to the room.
Going to try and do Warner brothers tomorrow.

Location: Santa Barbara, USA

Left Montery early and headed for Carmel for breakfast, as it is only 15min away. Found the main shopping area easy enough , just as I remembered it. The shops have a particular look, white walls, very up market. It was still early, most of the shops were not open yet, just as well. We could not afford to shop here, the place smells of money. Found a French inspired cafe, we had bacon eggs, pancakes, we are quite used to sharing as the meals are huge. After breakfast we drove around the 17 mile drive, it follows the coast, past lookouts and beautiful houses, or should I say property's as some are mansions. The area has a real mix of dwellings, English Victorian, Spanish , Unusual, big or cute. The coast is quite rough and rocky, the beaches are littered with smooth rocks all smooth from the constant pounding. Next overnighter is Santa Barbara, worked out it was 4 hours away, it was already lunch time. Set off and thought we would check out Hearst Castle on the way, an hour or so away. This started to feel like a long driving day, miles and miles of twisting coastal road ( great ocean road look alike). Kept going and going, slow cars, road works, all slowed us us. Just for a change they would throw a mountain in the way, up we go again, then down to sea level. Eventually made it to the Castle but it was too late in the day to go and see it. Had a look around the visitors center and headed off, 2 1/2 hours to go. Felt like a really long drive, long straight bits, me a bit over the limit , we're I was the slowest. Then in to the twisty mountains again. Finally dropped down suddenly into Santa Barbara a bit after 7. Nice hotel right on the beach. Went for a walk, grabbed a pizza. Checked out the wharf , just to stretch the legs. Stayed up late, checking finances, two days left.

Location: Monterey, USA

We've had our 3 days in San Fransisco, it was fantastic. Love SF. It was a fairly short drive from Oakdale, through suburbs and orchards. California is good for growing things by the look of all the roadside markets. Coming into SF concrete roads got busier and multileveled again. Double and Triple stacking roads is becoming the norm. The city is full of one way streets so you have to be careful when listening to the GPS. Found the hotel around lunchtime , because we where near union square that was where we went first. Found a hop on -hop off bus that we could use for the whole time in town. Did a scenic tour down near Fishermans Wharf, so we got off for a look around. First bowl of clam chowder , yum. Found the bus run that did the Golden Gate Bridge and jumped on that one. They warned us that sitting on the top of an open double decker bus crossing the bridge would be cold, they didn't lie. Geez it was cold, even though the sun was out. The ride was great, and funny, as the wind was blowing us around. Stopped on the other side for a while to take photos of the great view. You look back on the city which sits on the other side of the bay. When we got back to union square we asked Bobby from the bus company about seeing a "game" either football or baseball. The SF Giants were playing the Packers (baseball) at AT&T Park at 7.15pm and we could walk there, so we found the shop that sold tickets and ended up seeing the game. It was really good, the Giants won, we all got certificates that say that is was our first baseball game.
Next day we found a farmers market, which was fun. did another bus loop around the city, this time we saw some of the colorful houses and the bohemian shops, left over from the hippy days. All good. Walked through China town and had a late lunch in the Italian area.
The following day we did Alcatraz, which was really good. Had to be down at the dock by 9am, so we got up early and walked it. It was nice to check out the streets while they were quiet, because they are usually so busy. The audio tour of "the Rock" was really good, it really kept the kids interested. Afterwards we wandered around Fishermans wharf, more chowder.
This morning we did a bit of shopping before checking out. Monterey was about 1 1/2 hours away. The kids caught up on some sleep on the way, scenery changed again. More farming , mountains, and eventually the beach.
Monterey is beautiful. We walked up the pier which has shops and restaurants, more chowder for lunch. Wandered up Cannery Row, all shops, mostly selling souvenirs. While seeing the sights we saw otters, seals, and really big Gulls.
Ended up at Peter B's grill for happy hour, had a really nice dinner.
Back in our room, the girls have enough time to catch up on tv before bed.
Tomorrow we will go to Carmel by the Sea then on to Santa Barbera.

Location: Oakdale

When we came into Mammoth last night it was dark so we could not see much of the area. Our room had a large double glass window/door, when I slid the curtain back this morning I was greeted by the sight of mountains, pine trees and chipmunks scurrying around. The girls thought they were the cutest things they had ever seen. Had bagels for breakfast and loaded the van, set off for the village centre. We had seen photos on the net of the Mammoth Lakes Village, looked really good. It was nice but hardly anything was open at 10am on a Thursday. The town is really geared around the ski season, this was not skiing weather. Pointed the family truckster towards the Mountains and off we went. The upper most roads around Yosemite are around 9000 ft, we have been noticing that the last couple of days that we have been at 3000 then 7000 back down to 4000, etc, as you drive through the mountains. Good roads, great scenery all the way. Stopped at Mono Lake with its rock formations sticking out of the water. Had lunch by Lake Tenaya, beautiful spot. Haven't seen much wildlife, birds mostly. While driving, every time you come to a new corner in the road a new picture presents itself, then you have to stop the car and try and take a picture of something that is too big to fit into the viewfinder. All I can say is stunning. Walked a track that leads to an overlook of what they call the half dome, a huge dome shaped mountain in the distance. As you walk along, it is all rock and yet the pine trees still manage to sent roots down through the cracks, life always finds a way.Drove to the Yosemite village, which is in a valley of oaks, funny how the pines grow everywhere, but the oaks have found protection in the valley. Connie and I tried to get a coffee, but none to be found. Kids enjoyed and ice cream. Set the GPS for Oakdale, two hours to go, it was now 5 o'clock. Saw a deer on the way out of the valley. Lots of twisty roads to get off the Mountain. Finally arrived at the motel for a rest. Too tired to go out for dinner, kids were quite happy to watch tv till they fell asleep. Connie and I did some chores, I've added some photos to the diary. It's now midnight and everyone is asleep. Tomorrow is the short drive to San Fransisco, 3 nights, should be able to get a good feel for the place, already have Alcatraz tickets, looking forward to that.
The adventure continues.

Location: Mammoth Lakes, USA

Woke up this morning around 7, we decided to check out early, pack the car and go. As good as Vegas is, it's really busy, and a couple of days is enough. As we came down with the cases , to check out , I remembered I had not had a bet yet. Found the biggest " one armed bandit " I could find and put in a dollar...... I have to keep working, unfortunately. Found the Van, packed the cases, set the GPS, and off we went. First stop breakfast, "Hash House a Go Go" was the place to go, Connie had a tip to go there. The meals were unbelieveably big, Kara and Maddy shared a flap jack, it was way bigger than a dinner plate. Charlotte ordered French Toast and eggs, she eat most of it. Connie had eggs and toast with roast potatoes. I did not order as I knew I would end up eating what was left, and I did.
It was all really good. Then we went to Zero Engineering motorcycles. Had a good chat to Tak, the guy who runs the shop. He even took photos of me sitting on one of their bikes. Very very Cool. Bought the t-shirt, put my order in ( only kidding), then headed to the North Premium Outlet Stores for a spot of shopping. Baring in mind that we had to get to Mammoth, which I figured was 3 hrs away, we finally set the GPS.
It said 5 and a half hours!! We were still in Las Vegas, it was hot and around 2.30.
We set off with the mind set that when we get there, we get there. Don't panic.
Hit the multi lane concrete road and off we went. When you get out of LV , you hit the desert, always surrounded by mountains. The road is dead straight and flat, went through Death Valley, didn't die, which was good. One road would lead to another as get feel yourself getting further and further from anything. We ended up on roads virtually on our own, in the middle of the desert, you would not want to break down out here. After a few hours, the long ribbon of road eventually leads straight to the mountains, then it was the twisty bits. Very twisty, up one mountain down the next. Scenery was amazing. Shear walls of shale rock on both sides, round and round you go. , I never let the tank below half, you never know when you will see a Gas Station. Around 7 we saw sign posts for Mammoth. Got in at 7.30, that was a long drive. Found the Inn, threw out bags in the room, and went out for dinner. Nice dinner, we had a Pumkin cheesecake for desert, it was really good. Mammoth looks like a really cute ski village, we'll check it out in the morning before heading for Yosemite.
Another great ( long ) day.

Location: Las Vegas, USA

Wow, what can I saw about the Grand Canyon trip, except it was awesome. Picked up from the Hotel in a 10 seater Chevy Van, Louis are Chilian Guide was great. Left LV at 6.15am heading for Kingman on the old Route 66. Bought myself a small metal 66 sign as a momento. Breakfast in MacDonalds. Dropped in to Saligman which the town that inspired "cars" movie. Not much there except for a couple of Souvenir shops. Took some photos with the cars out the front , the Police car, Mater the old tow truck. The Four other people traveling with we're very nice and we were swapping stories as we drove on to the canyon. It is a long trip out, 5 and a half hours to get there. Slept a bit like everyone else, had trouble with the A/C, we just got on to the National Park when a Black and White pulled us up for speeding, got a warning, glad I was not driving.
Parked the van and walked to the rim.
WoW.
It's a beautiful thing. You have no way of explaining what it looks like except it is a work of art. We walked a total of 4 hours, kids got tired, but we all thought it was well worth the trip. Saw a squirrel, lizard and some Condors. Quite a few people
walking the trails, they run everywhere. stopped at about 5 different lookouts to take photos. Our guide told us all about the area and the people that lived there, is was very informative. Got back to the van at 5pm, drove back To LV sitting on 80 mph, back in LV by 9.30.
Bit hungry, so we picked up a 4 cheese pizza and a Bud and went back to out room. Didn't take long till the kids were in bed asleep, which left Connie and I to start thinking about tomorrow and our packing for Mamoth Lakes.
Great day.
Bruce

well done bruce, fighting with a gps doesn,t sound too good, but i,m sure connie,s glad she,s not the navigator ! i,m very glad the shark didn,t get you, maddy. how brave you all are! i certainly could.t do all that ,dropping, zig-zaging,round and up-sidedown stuff.luv Mum, H, Meggie.
Response: Hi Nancye, despite the fact we have the GPS who we have named Nuvi, I am very much the navigator. It is my job to type in where we are going and reinforce the instructions given by Nuvi. I constantly along with the girls, remind Bruce to stay on the right, look left, turn left but go long, keep right tight. Heading once into oncoming traffic was too many times for me. Luckily we have Nuvi because there is no stress and yelling out what are you doing! We just laugh when we take the wrong turn. It's all good.
Funny thing about Maddy is hearing her scream on the rides!
