Family Reunion!!

Under not so great circumstances, I was able to meet some more of my Father's extended family. Sadly my Grandmother passed away a few weeks ago, and we all met at the Funeral in Bournemouth (about 3 hours south of London). I met for the first time my Cousin Dylan and my Aunty and Uncle from South Africa, (Dad's brother Ken and his wife Gaye). It was all kind of surreal but really nice, 5 of us (cousins) live in London, all pretty much the same age, so we will catch up again soon. I only have 2 more to meet, a cousin, Tamaryn who is living in South Africa and Dad's other brother Ian, who lives in Spain. The Rohan Family are literally all over the World.....crazy stuff!

80's Party!!

On Saturday night I went to an 80's Birthday Party in an underground chinese resturant in the middle of South Kensignton.....wierd stuff!!!
So Christie and I, still hung over from the night before chuffed off to Camden Markets to buy our 80's get up! Not being able to raid our mothers cupboards we had to find alternative resources...so off to the markets we go!! There were a number of Vintage shops there with clothes from all eras, so it wasn't long before we stubled across an 80's shop and next minute... trying on a number of hidious items! It was a buy one get one free deal so we decided to go dressed the same, brightly coloured polka dot top, black leggings and bright legwarmers.....yep the old legwarmers...and I tell you one thing, they keep your legs bloody warm!! We topped it off with crimped hair and large coloured hoop earings.....oh and don't forget lots of blue eyeshadow!!! (Total outfit cost: £7)
So all ready to go, friends were arriving at the apartment for drinks and........didn't seem to be dressed as ridiculous as Christie, Eddie, Bart and I....."hhmmmm what's going on here"! Turns out it was a Miami Vice Party................aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!! Anyways the boys were in their suits with their sleeves pushed up and the girls had something similar and here we were with our bright Polka dot pijama looking top and LEGWARMERS!!
So embarrassed to even leave the bedroom to have a drink with our friends, we put our trench coats on and pretended we didn't misread the invitation!!!
We went to the party still with our coats on.....and we quietly revealed our mess up to other party goers and of course they all told us to take off our coats!!! After a few drinks, it was getting too hot so we didn't have an option but to reveal all!! Turned out every one loved our matching outfits and thought we made a fantastic effort!!!
It was all a bit of fun.....they had the old Miami Vice movie running on the plasmas around the resturant and we danced all night to good old 80's music!!

As it turns out the 80's fashion has made a come back....so that's great news.....now we can reuse our costumes next Saturday night!! Mum can u send me some of your Shoulder Pads!!!

SPORTS DAY 3: WIMBLEDON
So it was that time of year again.....very exciting....my favourite London event...Wimbeldon. I chucked sicky at work.....I ate some "bad eggs"!! Oh well, Wimbledon is not to be missed....Christie was very excited not having been before and being a tennis fan like me. I was also excited after going last year and having great fun, even if it did rain cats and dogs...but hey that's the real Wimbledon experience!! There was no sign of rain this day, about 29/30 degrees from memory, it was really hot anyway. It was the 8th Day of play so they were getting down to the nitty gritty! First of all we caught a Vetrans doubles match with 3 Aussies and a Brit, that was good fun as they always have joke and take the piss out of each other.

Then we found our way to Henman Hill to drink our Pimm's and lemonade with all the fruit trimmings that I'd prepared the night before. Watched some Center Court matches on the big screen, had some Strawberries and Cream and just chilled out really.
We'd read in the order of play that the Woodie's were playing at some stage but the court no. would be disclosed later on. Waiting anxiously for the Court No., we stubled across a game with Liz Smiley....you know the extra woman...."Extra with the great taste that really lasts", her and her partner won so that was good. We finally got notice that the Woodies were playing on Court 1, so we quickly bought a re-sale ticket, only 5pounds for Court 1 and made our way to our seats. There was a doubles match going on that looked like it was finishing up..................NOT!! The last set was up to 15 to 14 games before they suspended play because of light....dam poms don't beleive in lights cause that's not tradition!!. Meanwhile we missed the Woodies as they were put on another court, nevertheless the doubles match was great to watch and there was an Aussie in that too. I had to listen to the remainder of the match on the radio at work the next day......the total match time was something crazy like 6hours.......and the Aussie dude lost after all that!! So that was another great day at a British sporting event.

COUSIN KELLY COMES TO LONDON
It was very exciting to see someone from home, Cousin Kelly from Melbourne was over here on a 3 week holiday. Most of her time was spent in Spain and Portugal with a few days either side in London. So I briefly saw Kel the night before she left for Spain and then met back up with her a few weeks later.....and of course she came back with an awesome tan, but the competition was fierce with my super hot British one!! We proceeded to eat our way around London the whole weekend, sampling a number of different international cusines and large quantities of local beverages!!

Ethnic Cusine No 1: Ethiopian
A few of us went to a Ethiopian resturant just near Clapham on the Friday night, being a little bit sceptical about the cusine, we were afraid we may be sharing a few grains of rice and some dirty water!!! Turns out they put on quite a feast, just using primitive methods to eat it!! You'll see in my photos the massive spread that was put in front of us, thick savoury crepe like bread with a lemon tang topped with an array of meat stews, mixed vegetables, lentils, chicken legs and more. We were lucky enough to get a demonstation on how to eat it...apparently verbal instructions were not enough!! Rip off some of the bread and scoop up some meat and shove in mouth.......lucky Kel got to eat the sample from the hands of the Ethiopian Mama waitress, as seen in the photos! A massive bown of Popcorn followed our main meal with some burnt espresso coffee!!

Ethnic Cusine No 2: Thai
We spent the sunny Saturday arvo at the Boathouse Pub in Putney, drinking Pimms, with views of the sparkling clean & clear Thames River......no, I mustn't joke...it was quite nice, we couldn't see the surige from where we were sitting!

For dinner we went to a really nice little cute Thai Resturant.....the best Thai I've had in London so far....duck spring rolls and more!!

Ethnic Cusine No. 3: Asian
Sunday arvo we went to this smick new Bar/Lounge/Resturant that had recently opened up in Camden. The interior was exquisted....all the funiture and decore had been hand carved and imported from India, it was an Egyptian type theme with Asian Cusine. Visit www.gilgameshbar.com to see what it looks like......so incredible. We had a bottle of Champagne and some Dim sums, and figured seeing the bill was already racked up quite high...that it would be a good idea to move on down the road to another resturant for dinner!! I will definitely be going back there to experience the resturant at some stage!!
Ethnic Cusine No. 4: Belguin
So some friends who lived locally took us to their favourite Belguim Resturant.....and we proceeded to eat way too much for one night.....Kel and I shared a large bowl of Mussels and a huge serving of saugages and mash...Belguin style.....thick creamy mash with tasty fat sausages!! Oh and we topped that off with a waffel and ice cream and about 4 shots of different kinds of Belguin Scnapps!! It was served in a long wooden rack....very cool, see photos!!

So fantastic weekend for eating.......not so good for the waistline....lucky Cousin Kelly is not here all the time!!

SPORTS DAY 2 - ROYAL HENLEY REGATTA (1st/2nd July)
So Christie works for a catering company called Greens, and she had been away all week working at a Rowing Regatta at Henley. I received a phone call Saturday morning with proposition from Christ to go out to Henley and stay there for the weekend. It seemed like a rather big effort at the last minute but Carly and my flatmate Shannon were keen to go also. The weather was great, 30degrees, so next minute we were on the train to Henley-upon-Thames. Only an hour and half away, the small town was hopping when we arrived, the Thames river had never looked so clean and beautiful. Christie gave us instructions to walk a short way along the river until we get to the Greens Marquee which was near the start line. Pushing through the crowds with our big bags full of doona's and pillows, we made it to Christie's tent an HOUR LATER. Turned out the train station was at the finish line!!
So we said hi to Christ and headed to the closest bar, the Barn Bar to watch the World Cup, England v Portugal. Awesome atmostphere, we were into the Pimms, out in the sun, cheering for England.......until they lost to Portugal in a penalty shootout!!!! Not happy about this we decided to drown our sorrows by drinking a little more.

Christie shut shop shortly after and joined us for what turned out to be a long boozy night, it reminded me of what I imagine a B&S Ball to be like with the Bar that looked like a big barn...hence the name Barn Bar!! Crazy poms were swimming in the freezing river by moonlight......at 1am.....very outragous behaviour!! After we all got kicked out of the Barn Bar we stubled a whole 20meters to our classy accomodation that you can see in the photos....yes we slept in the Greens Marquee on the chair cusions!! It was fun until the morning when we could actually see the all bugs on us and had to listen to the massive Scoop truck collecting the mountains of rubbish outside!! Trying to cure the hiddious hangover we ate some greasy food for breaky and sat in the sun with our feet in the river watching the rowers making way too much effort for a Sunday!! I would love to share the very interesting stories we got told by one of the grounds men from the night before.....but lets just say the oldies and children who are reading may not appreciate them very much!!

Great English weekend really, ladies in their wide brim hats or umbrellas sitting in their beautiful antique boats drinking Pimms while the men smoked their pipes. There was even a home owner near by who took his ducks into the river for their daily exercise, the ducks followed him in perfect line...it was very cute!! People even set up a table by the river with white linen table clothes and wore races style outfits...what toffs!!!!!!

Next installment is Wimbledon and Cousin Kelly comes to London!

THE LONDON SUMMER

WIRELESS FESTIVAL HYDE PARK!
So Chrsitie and I realised that one of our favourite artists was playing at the Wireless Festival in London...David Gray.....but of course it was on a weekday!! So after making a huge saving on eBay, I won the tickets for a quarter of the retail price, I justified my savings by leaving work a few hours early to get to the concert. Carly came with us too. Missy Higgins played, KT Tunstall a few others and then David Gray finished the night off with a bang. It was a fun night especially for only 9pounds!! eBay became addictive and I continued my beginners luck to purchase Royal Ascot Race Day tickets.....keep reading to hear about this stressful but delightful escapade.

SPORTING MANIA!
After Horse Racing, Football (soccer), Rowing and Tennis there are very few English sports I am yet to experience......perhaps some Polo matches!!!
This last month in London I have been getting in touch with my English heriatige and experiencing the English Culture!! Thank god the weather has not been traditional English style....it has been taking some notice from all the Aussies that live here and is absolutely fantastic, in the 30's for most weekends and this week London reached a record breaking top of 36.5 degrees, skirts and singlets all the way!!

WORLD CUP
The World Cup fever definitely hit England. The England flags were out, t-shirts, horn blowers and I believe the widescreen TV sales went through the roof!!! Pretty much every pub showed every game, there were a few that had signs out the front saying "We are a World Cup free zone!!" They would have missed out on loads and loads of sales....crazy people!! So we were at a different pub for every England game and had to watch the replays of the few Aussie games at the Walkabout as we were stuck at work when these were on! The atmosphere was fantastic however came to a screaming holt when England were kicked out!! Everyone lost real interest and only went to watch the semi and the final. I can't believe those cheating Italian's won....not happy Jan!!

SPORTS DAY 1: Royal Ascot Race Day
The most prestiegous race day in the world, the venue recently undertook a 200 Million Pound refurbishment, so it was almost as good as the Gold Coast Turf Club!!! Dramatic start to the day!!...It was the morning of Royal Ascot and Christie and Kate did not have their very expensive tickets in their hot little hands!!! Having slight stress out...due to the price they had paid and the fun they were planning to have, Christ and Kate waited anciously for Postman Pat to deliver the Saturday morning mail!! We heard the letter box flap chink and mail hit the floor, running to the door only to find a god dam BILL!! So Kate rang the post office and after much persuasian she made the lazy lady go have a look for the tickets......she said 'there is no way the Postman would have forgotten to put a slip in the mail to tell you that ur registered mail was at the depot". Turned out Postman Pat failed us and the tickets had been sitting there for 4 days!!!! Running to the not so close depot, cursing the fabulous ROYAL MAIL the whole way, they finally got their classy looking tickets!!
Making a fashionably and a little frazzled late entrance to Royal Ascot, we met our friends and partied on...royal racing style. Only betting on one Australian horse who had won a few days earlier, turned out he was a donkey when it came to the longer distances, so we thought we would invested our money in a guranteed return on investment..........DRINKS!!
The ladies outfits were very conservative, not many bright colours, I think Christ had the brightest dress on out of everyone. The guys looked great in their suits, especially the ones who wore Tops and Tails!! It looked like some thing out of a black and white movie, there weren't just a few, it was most of the men in Top hats and Tails. We saw the Queen in her very flash Royal Box....she was wearing green again, looked like she was enjoying herself...we ask if we could share her box but she said our accents were unbearable!!
We stayed until we pretty much got kicked out.....they were packing up the Verve and Moet tents...left over full bottles everywhere, we tried to sweet talk our way to a free bottle but no one was feeling generous towards a bunch of drunken 20 somethings!! All in all, a great day....it was worth the $500 dollars it probably cost me......evened out my $500 winnings I had at Canberra races in March.

SPORTS DAY 2: Royal Henly Regatta
I wont bore u now but I'll write soon about the next British sporting event!!
