Location: Belgrade, Yugoslavia

MapFrom Budapest we headed south to the Serbian border.Since our last visit to Hungary in 1998 and again in 2000 we have seen remarkable improvements in the roading infrastructure.Mind you that was very necc. as in Communist times roads had only to be good enough for tank access the rest of the population could drive their crap Trabants,Daicias,Yugos and Ladas as well as trucks on pothole roads.
Their was the usual delays at the border as passports were gathred to be carried away to some cubbyhole for perusal and eventual stamping then a head count to ensure that the number off passports equalled the umber of people.
The problems for big trucks was far worse worse though. We counted up to eighty trucks sititing at the border for twodays or more while cargo was checked for contraband organic and inorganic.People smuggling is big business and very lucrative for the drivers and at times officials can be bribed.
Noticed that in Hungary the rural scene was changing now they are in the EU,more land use, larger fields as land titles are consolodated and the vexed questions of historical land ownership are settled sometimes by court action.Crops typically are sunflowers, maize.potatoes, cerials and hops as well as fruit trees and vineyards.
