Sarah’s Travel Diary

Location: Cambridge, UK

MapOk, I've been in the UK for almost a year now and in the early hours of the morning I'll be catching a plane back to Australia for a well earned break from the weather so I thought that this would be an opportune time to reflect on my time here............
Having done that reflecting all I have come up with is the one thing that irritates me most about the English, and despite what people may think it's not the way they all make fun of the way I speak, although that can be quite annoying, nor is it the fact that they get cranky when yu call chips chips instead of crisps, or beer beer instead of larger, (I work in a pub remember, It's an important issue), nor the fact that they get really really cross if you call soccer soccer and not football and then follow that up by saying that it's just a silly game anyway so it dosen't really matter what you call it. No, the most irritating thing about the English is the way everybody here calls you Darling, or Honey, or Sweetheart, or Darling, or Babe, or Darling, or Love, or Darling!!!!! I hate it! It's not just the older people like who you usually get it from in Australia, it's everyone, all ages, all genders, every single bloody person, or at least so it seems to me. It really makes you want to bash them all around the head a bit with a cricket bat, or some other hard sporting impliment. It is even worse that the habit seems to be catching, after the end of a long day of work, having been called Darling by about a million people and hearing everyone call each other Darling you begin to start saying it yourself, rather the way that everyone starts saying cheers after about three months in the country. But don't worry, I've not caught the terrible plauge, I still manage to catch myself when I start to say it, but even so thank god I've got a few weeks in Aus to look forward to. I just hope no one calls me Darling!
