The Adventurer’s Travel Diary

Location: Ansan City, Korea (South)

MapToday our boss took us on a spring picnic. This is an annual event at ECC and is lots of fun. A bus was provided and we headed out at 8 am to the province of Gangwon-do to a mountain about 3 hours away from Ansan. We had a lot of laughs on the bus and played a few games. Halfway to our destination we realized traffic was too heavy and that it would take at least half a day to get there, so we took the road less travelled and headed south to Sobaeksan mountain. When we arrived, we started with a little tour of a cave. They had awesome natural shapes and forms out of the stalactites and staligmites (you know, the pointy things that come down from the roof of the cave and up from the bottom). Then our boss, Mr. Kim bought us all a very healthy lunch consisting of bibimbap (rice mixed with vegetables and a spicy red sauce) and vegetables on the side.

After lunch, we began our hike. This was not easy. We expected an easy excursion considering they call it a picnic! Nonetheless, we carried on. I'm happy to say I took one for the Canadians and went all the way to our destination as did 2 other Canadian teachers, our boss and the bus drivers. The others turned back halfway up and went to play soccer baseball. We ate delicious Korean pancake and drank Makkoli (rice wine) at the top. We came back down and still managed to play soccer baseball, so I'm proud to say we did it all.

Of course, the view was amazing. You know in Canada that our mountains are rocky (and still beautiful) but in Korea the trees go to the top of the mountains so it makes it look like rolling mountains, set among the valleys below and the lush green landscape. It's something I don't think I've seen anywhere else in the world--yet.

We headed back to Ansan after the soccer baseball game. Beer was provided on the bus ride home and a good time was had by all.
