Location: Arequipa, Peru

MapArrive Arequipa.

Early evening visit to the local clinic, Clinica Arequipa, to be told to come back and visit the specialist on Saturday. Saturday meant a prod from the emergency ward doctor, junior doctor and Cardio-Vascular specialist. Admitted almost immediately and 6 blood samples taken in one afternoon. I dont mind having blood taken, but being used as a pin cushion was a little too much that day!

So what happened. The doc said Thrombophlebitis, which is a localised inflammation of a vein that has resulted in clotting (Thrombosis) of the blood within the affected part. The clot had formed behind my left knee, and affected a vein near the surface (a superficial vein), rather than a deep vein, in which case it would have been full on DVT.
