Location: Rishikesh, India

MapAfter spending almost six weeks in Dharmsala I'm back on the road again! Taking the time to chill out for a bit in Dharmsala has definantly proven to be the right thing to do. Not only am I rested and ready to resume my travels, but its been really great working with the Tibetan community and getting to know a bit more about Buddhism.

I left Dharmsala the day before yesterday and caught the night bus to Haridwar to be there for Diwali, the Hindu New Year festival. Haridwar is the place where the Ganges leaves the Himalayas, and as such is considered a very sacred place by Hindus. I arrived early in the morning in time to see the throngs of people at ghat (bathing steps) washing themselves in the river and performing various rituals. At sunset that evening however, there were thousands of people on the ghat for the final river prayer of the year. As soon as the ceremony was over the fun began, with fireworks being let off all over the city. It was really dangerous just walking around the streets, as fireworks, ranging from little bungers to huge fountain and flower fireworks were being let off in the middle of the road and often misfiring and bouncing off buildings! Everyone was in great spirits though, and it was excellent to hang out with the India families watching (and creating) the firework displays.

I arrived in Rishikesh (The Yoga Capital of the World) this morning, and I'm staying in a yoga ashram, where I'm going stay for a few days and be healthy and do yoga twice a day!
