Location: The Grampians, Australia

MapThe Grampians

Halls Gap being winter was pretty deserted. The caravan park owners laugh when we ask if there are sites left. A pretty basic site with toilets and showers but no camp kitchen so the first proper cooking on our little stove.

Next day we head off into the hills. Amazing views, National Heritage Park, perfect for waterfalls, walks and of course photography!!!! Some stiff climbs but all in the effort of keeping me trim enough for my bridesmaid dress! (this is obviously Debbie writing this segment!)

Finally…………a week in the van and we’re bush camping in the middle of the National Park. Well we had a long drop (a cubicle with a toilet that just leads down to the ground for you town folk) but Jim collected the wood and we cooked our dinner and toasted marshmallows over the fire! We were truly roughing it.........accompanied by the 20yr old Aussie bogons (12 of them) on a weekend away, with a slab each and on a mission to hunt big cats and possums! No real problems caused though as most of them drunk too much and passed out in their tents by 9.30.

Back into town the next day and it’s like a different place, buzzing with families away for the long weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. Yes that’s right you English lot you are all being cheated out of a public holiday. All the Kiwis and Aussies get an extra day off each year to recognise our Queens fake birthday!!!
