Alaska’s Travel Diary

Location: Canada

MapLong day, but rewarding.....wildlife galore. I failed to mention in our last note that we have seen 3 or more mormots. Today, however, we saw 3 black bears, 3 moose, mountain goats, and a coyote. We left Stewart-Hyder at 9 a.m. after a good breaky at a local place where we met a Cree medicine man. Needless to say, he must have seen Gwynne's aura as we sat down and he struck up a conversation, eh? He was on a buying trip for healing stones for clients, eh?
The road was great and we were ready to brag to Gene, Alton, and Bob that the Cassiar was GREAT! Hold on, not so fast, we were wrong, they were right! We putted along for what seemed an eternity on pitted gravel roads. We made friends with one of the flag boys near the end of the highway while we were waiting to get the okay to move on. He was picking wild strawberries. They are miniatures....tiny little things....and tasted just like the large varieties we buy in the stores. He told us that these are what the bears like to eat.
The latter miles of the Cassiar are known for their jade and so you know we had to stop at Jade City to have a look. We arrived in Teslin in the Yukon around 9:45 p.m. Nite all!
