Alaska’s Travel Diary

MapAll ate cereal and were packed and out of the cabin by 8:45 heading for WalMart for a patch for Sam and postcards. We got to the White Sands National Monument Visitor's Center around 9:30 and got oriented with their park video and got Sam started on his Junior Ranger program. We headed for the dunes with our boogie boards, complete with picnic tables and shade.....it is very hot, even though we woke up to a cool morning. The temp at the cabin was probably in the 60's, while the sand dunes had to be in the 90's and feel much hotter atop the white sand. But we didn't let that bother us. Sam became a master-boarder, but Tracy & I tried our hands at it too. The climb up the dune is strenuous. Tracy sat in the back seat with Sam to get him started on his first badge for the Junior Ranger program. I think we all learned something from it. We took a very short hike and maybe spent 2 hours in the park before leaving for Las Cruces with our planned meal out at La Posta in the suburb of Mesilla. Food was great. We gassed up and were on the road....played more Car Quest, daily winners fluctuating from Mom to Sam to Tracy until we started the 'shout-out' version Gwynne made up. We had a few laughs over the 'shout-outs'! With a few more pit stops and gas in Albuquerque (too late to shop in Old Town, darnit!), we turned west to Arizona, gaining another hour because they don't observe Daylight Savings Time. We'll lose that hour in a couple of days when we cross over into Utah. Sam napped in the car again, exhausted from his long day of boarding and learning. He watched a video, Mom & Gwynne played Rummy, and Tracy & I listened to Dave Mathews & Slumdog Millionaire. Pulled into the Holbrook KOA around 8:00 p.m. only to unpack, shower, and go to bed.....found a few minutes to upload pictures, sitting in the cabin w/ WiFi.....to bed around 10 p.m. Mom seems to be holding up good, although I don't think she would tell us if she is displeased with anything. I will have to quiz her today. It is 5:00 a.m. and I am sitting in the van with my nighty on and a jacket as everyone else except Mom is asleep. She asked me how to turn off the motor next to her, chuckling while she speaks......still has a since of humor, eh? We go through Petrified Forest/Painted Desert this a.m., working on Junior Ranger again, then proceed to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon where we will be for 2 nights in a slightly bigger cabin w/ a bathroom & shower. Yippeeeee!
