Alaska’s Travel Diary

Tuesday, 12 Jun 2012

Location: USA

Map…..Failed to mention yesterday that we now have a P.O. Box at the post office here in Ninilchik. Any correspondence can be sent to any one of us (including Dylan) @ P.O. Box 39719, Ninilchik, AK 99639.
We’ve reserved a 2-berth cabin for our return trip on the Columbia ferry which will take us from Skagway, AK to Bellingham, WA cutting off five days of travel through Canada. We think the trip will be a great experience for Dylan. He may see whales, pacific-sided Dolphins, seals, otters, along with other wildlife. There is a Park Ranger on board, so Dylan may choose to earn yet another Junior Ranger badge going through Tongass National Forest. Sammy (my great-nephew) did this in 2008. The ferry takes the same route the crusises take, but the amenities are different.
The Bearor’s arrive today for a few days….sure to have some fun visiting Homer, Soldotna, and/or Kenai. An Alaskan artist has a showroom in route to Homer where there is a boardwalk of shops, fishing charters, restaurants, bars, etc., as well as another candy factory (sister store of Anchorage’s chocolate factory), winery & meadery, just to mention a few things to do. The fried Halibut on a stick is delectable, but the price creeps up a notch every time we revisit. We will probably even spend a couple of hours in our little village of Ninilchik. It is of Russian heritage, where the town actually has two areas of residency….the Russian village and the town of Ninilchik for everybody else. The village has a Russian Orthodox Church which looks like the ones you see pictures of in magazines.
Thursday John will venture out on a neighbor’s charter to try his hand at King Salmon and Halibut fishing…an all-day affair. However, if the wind is anything like it was yesterday, that excursion may be postponed or cancelled all together.
Tomorrow nothing is planned, except for collecting eggs.
