Anita and Bernie’s Travel Diary

Thursday, 17 Jan 2008

Location: Masterton, New Zealand

MapHi everyone - this will be a short diary entry because we have been having too much fun and we are off camping around North Island in 30 mins for 8 days.
Wellington was great but we now know why they call it 'the windy city!!!' The bay has lovely walkways and a sculpture garden. We took a cable car up to the top end of Wellington and saw fantastic views of the harbour. Bernie and Richard spent a good half an hour in the small cable car museum whilst I had a cup of coffee overlooking the harbour! We then did a lovely walk down through the Botanical gardens to the bottom of the hill. That took about 1 hr but it was worth it to see the amazing array of flora that was in bloom for January.
It is lovely to have Richard with us and he is enjoying NZ apart from the bugs that keep biting him!
Richard and Bernie stayed in Wellington for the night to visit the famous Te Papa Museum. They spent the whole day there looking at the Maori culture and the impact of immigration. I returned to my sister for a girls night in!
The trip to Martinborough wineries was tasty but as they are boutique wines they are very expensive so we only bought 1 bottle for the equivalent of 9 pounds. We visited 4 vineyards and one olive grove. The weather was fab and at the last vineyard we sat outside under the shade to sample 5 glasses of wine. Heavenly!
I had another 'hero' moment when we went to the Waiohine gorge. I crossed over the suspension bridge with the help of Richard! It is now made of steel and I thought it would be easier to cross but I was still terrified and halfway across I froze and wanted to turn back but with the persuasion from Richard I carried on. It swings in the wind and you can see through the walkway to the river far below. The old rope bridge (which I could not cross last time I was there) was damaged by the floods and high winds 2 years ago. The new bridge is about 30 feet higher than the old bridge! Those pictures will be on the blog next week.
We have picked up our hire car and also bought a tent. We are going touring around North Island to see Napier, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park (site of Mordor in Lord of the Rings).
There will be no blog for another week as we will be incommunicado!
all the best
