Location: Kaikura, New Zealand

MapHi Everyone - we had a great crossing from North to South Island. The crossing was smooth and the approach to South Island was spectacular going through many fjords. We stayed in Picton for the night in a small backpackers hostel. Very cosy but as it was right next to the railway station we were awoken in the wee small hours with the movement of freight trains!!
The drive to Kaikura was also spectacular with the road hugging the dramatic coastline. It was made even more special with the sightings of seals in the sea and sunning themselves on the rocks. Unfortunately when we arrived at Kaikura our whale watching trip had been cancelled due to swells out at sea of over 3 metres high! We are booked on one tomorrow morning at 6.15 am (what we do for love) before we depart for Christchurch. I really hope it happens as I would love to see the whales.
We took a walk out to a limestone platform near the sea ans saw even more seals basking in the sunshine so it was not all wasted.
More on the whales (hopefully) tomorrow.
All our love
