Anita and Bernie’s Travel Diary

Location: Christchurch, New Zealand

MapHello everyone - great to hear the news about Emma K's baby boy!! Well.......we did it! We got up at 5.30 am this morning and went whale watching at 6.15am. To my mind it was still very choppy out there but once we got used to the motion of the boat things were fine. I must admit that standing on a rolling deck waiting for a whale to surface reminded me of the film 'Jaws'!!!
We saw two whales, one called 'Saddleback' who has been visiting Kalkura for 20 years. It was amazing to be so up close (less than 50 metres) to these magnificent creatures. It was also fantastic to see them dive with their tail flukes in the air (just wait for the pictures!) We also saw Albatrosses in flight over the water. What graceful birds as they soar and glide with the tip of one wing nearly touching the water.
The drive to Christchurch, in the rain, was uneventful mainly because I slept for three quater of it. It is the usual coastal route for NZ with stunning scenery and twisting roads followed by mountainous passes into the interior with lots of hairpin bends (thank goodness we had practice going over the Alps in Europe).
The rest of the day was spent sightseeing in Christchurch, riding its trams and free shuttle buses. Tomorrow we leave for Timaru.
