Location: Masterton, New Zealand

MapBERNIE AND I SPENT THE NIGHT IN JAIL IN CHRISTCHURCH. More about that later.
We sadly said goodbye to our hired car in Greymouth, a grey town which does not make the best use of its potential. We took the Trans Scenic train from Greymouth to Christchurch through some lovely scenery. It is meant to be one of the top ten train journeys in the world going through deep gorges contrasting with wide valleys. Unfortunately.....it rained half way through so we could not see the mountain tops.
We arrived in Christchurch early evening (train was delayed by one hour) to go straight to jail!! (do not pass go, do not collect your 200 pounds etc). In fact it was a backpackers hostel!!! It was a jail until 1999 but was only converted into the hostel 16 months ago. Our room was indeed a cell complete with bars at the window and a heavy steel door! The room was accessed via the staircase to the walk around gallery (just like porridge). It was a fun experience but as the room was only cell sized a longer stay might prove difficult.
We spent a lovely evening with our nephew Ben and his delightful daughter Mila. It was Ben's birthday that day.
We have now returned to Masterton to spend the final few days with my sister. Luckily we are here for her birthday as I have not celebrated her birthday with her for 37 years!!
I am dreading saying goodbye to her on Sunday but looking forward to seeing her in England next year.
