Anita and Bernie’s Travel Diary

Tuesday, 19 Feb 2008

Location: Auckland, New Zealand

MapThank you all for your notes on my accident - I must say that some of you could show more sympathy (especially you Finoula and Marlene)!!
Our last day in Wellington and with Yvonne was lovely. We took an early train to Wellington and managed to check into our hotel at 10 am so that we could off-load our cases. We met up very briefly with Sam for a coffee in a nicely converted bank but unfortunately he had to shoot off to work. We timed our visit to the city really well because it was 'Wellington on the Waterfront' day so there were lots of great activities going on eg helicopter displays, bands, free trips around the harbour to see the new, enormous cruise ship 'Queen Victoria'. We had a lovely lunch at Mac's Brewery on the waterfront which had excellent beers and great fish and chips. We visited Te Papa museum again to see a highly entertaining exhibit/film about the achievements & disasters of NZ. Bernie wanted to stay to see some more exhibits, so Yvonne & I were forced to 'hit the shops'!! ... we did not get that far as the queue for the free tug/fire tender ride was short. We decided to take advantage of this &, with Yvonne's insistence that we stay in the queue, we managed a free trip! It was great fun!
It was a very emotional farewell to Yvonne at the railway station. We have had a wonderful time with her ... & Blossom & the cats!
The next day, we took the 12 hour (it became 13 hours) train ride back to Auckland. Once again it was fantastic scenery of coasts, mountains, gorges, rainforest, & grasslands.
Our last day in Auckland has been eventful as well. Anita wanted a 'value for money day', so we spent $13 each on a one day pass on the public transport system, so we had 2 bus rides (1 hour each) and 4 ferry rides across the harbour. Devonport is an enchanting little & expensive place - & not just the food! Well worth the visit. Birkenhead is a lot more picturesque here than in Liverpool!
Tomorrow, early, we fly to Sydney & the great Oz for our next country for sight-seeing.
All the best from NZ!
