Heading off to Nelson

We had a slight lay-in this morning leaving at 9am. Again we had an amazingly scenic trip, driving up and over mountains and through the famous Marlborough Sounds, which (i think im right in saying) is the 2nd largest sound in the world. To put it simply it's like a massive basin. Very picturesque and one of the best sources of Sauvignon Blanc. On the other side of the sound was Picton.

At Picton half of our group left to board the ferry to the North Island and we got a new driver, Buz, who had been a Kiwi Experience Driver for 13 years!

We began our journey again and after an hour or so we stopped for lunch at Pelorus Reserve, which was actually named after Dolphins which used to follow the ships in and out of the rivers.

After leaving the reserve and travelling for an hour we arrived at our destination; Fern Lodge, Nelson.

The accommodation was quite good. It was a pub with a hostel built on the side of it. Once we got settled, Re and I along with Alex, Louise, Aled and Jemma journeyed to the centre of New Zealand! After a 30 minute walk (steep walk) we reached the geographical centre and were graced with panoramic views of Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park (New Zealands smallest but most famous park, whose name sake was the first to discover New Zealand, but, interestingly, because of a misunderstanding with the local Maori's, 6 of his crew were killed and he never actually set foot on New Zealand soil!)

After our walk all of us sat down for dinner, the Lodge did us a meal deal on a Lamb Roast Dinner for $12! After this we stayed to watch the Super 14's Semi-final (rugby union) where the Christchurch Hurricanes played the Wellington Chiefs. It was a good game the Chiefs won, which is the team we were gunning for as both drivers Buz and Morrie supported them.
