Maurice Greer’s Travel Diary

Location: Albufeira, Portugal

MapAlbufeira has been heavily commercialized for tourists and there are lots of bars, restaurants and apartments. Being the off season, many of the businesses were not open yet but we were the first dinner customers of the season at an Irish bar for St Patrick’s Day. There’s not much architectural heritage around but we did find an apartment building that had features similar to Gaudi’s La Pedrera in Barcelona and there are also some unusual chimneys.
The weather was very windy and cool for two days so we did some sight seeing trips to neighbouring towns including the Villamoura marina and Capo de St Vincente, the most south-westerly point in Europe. We were able to spend a few hours at the beach two of the days when it warmed up into the mid 20s C. Beaches in the area close to our apartment were coves between rocky headlands and had beautiful soft white sand and clean “cold” water – good for wading in March.
