Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand

MapWow - what a day. I don't know how to begin to capture it in words. We spent the day at the Lek Elephant Nature Park, which is an hours drive out of Chiang Mai.

In 1989 logging was banned in Thailand. This left a lot of unemployed elephants. Lek began this park as a refuge for elephants who have been either abandoned, abused or in some other way found themselves in bad circumstances. She refers to it as Elephant Heaven. There are 35 elephants at the park, varying in ages from babies to 87 years old.

We spent the day feeding elephants, bathing them in the river and just enjoying these majestic beasts.

It was a day of firsts - Terry and I both had our first kiss from an elephant. It was amazingly gentle.

We also learned that elephants spend 18 hours a day eating and eat a WHOLE LOT of food. People from all over the world come to the park to volunteer usually for a week at a time.

Something else I learned was that there is something out there that has more gas than Terry!! Wow do elephants fart loud (and long). I guess it's all that ruffage.

Will try and download some pictures -- it's very difficult here because the internet is sooooooo sloooooow!
