Location: Beijing, China

MapAt first glance Beijing is a thoroughly modern city, but our tour this morning took us by rickshaw to the Old City. This was great fun particularly when the brake was applied to the rickshaw. We went to the Hutong area of the city, these are ancient courtyard houses. Here we met a resident and through an interpreter we were able to ask questions about daily life.
We also met the national cricket champion who told us how to train champion crickets- his cost 50,000 pounds as cricket fighting is a big sport in Beijing.
After lunch we went to Liuilichang, the calligraphy street to watch craftsmen at work.
We climbed the Drum Tower later to watch a performance of the beating in of the time.
Dinner was memorable -stories to tell!!

In the evening, we took the overnight sleeper to Xian which is to be our home for the next couple of days before we fly to Wuhan where our bus takes us to the cruise ship on the Yangtse river for 5 nights.
