Location: Puerto Maldonado, Peru

MapOff to the rainforests of the Amazon.....

The drive to the airport for the domestic flight to Puerto was an eye opener, what a dive the suburbs of this city is. ....a very poor, dirty area indeed. I would not like to walk round in these suburbs... a far cry from the historical centre.

The flight itself via Cusco provided us with spectacular views over the Andes but the approach into Cusco was interesting, riding the thermals for the first stop en route to Puerto.

Once we arrived at our destination, we had a short drive to the port on the River Madre de Dios, a tributary of the Amazon, to pick up the motorised canoe to take us to the Inkaterra Hacienda Conception.

Once at the lodge, we thought we were in heaven, what a fabulous place. The detached lodges were dotted here and there in isolated clearings , each with its own balcony protruding into the rainforest. There was no glass in any windows here, just netting, although we saw no nasty biting beasties at all.
We have been most impressed with the quality of the accommodation, the delicious food, the service, the organisation, brilliant.

Our first excursion was a short one, a walk round one of the trails on the reserve to get orientated.

Late after dinner, at twilight, we went by motorised canoe for a ride along the river, brown with the silt.... the sky is vast and beautiful here and it was so pleasant to get the breeze over the water. We were lucky enough to see plenty of birds and several white caiman on the banks.

And then early to bed to get ready for the 5am start.....
