Di’s Travel Diary

MapEverything you have read, heard and seen about how dry it is out west is true. They haven't seen rain in four years.

We enjoyed Longreach. There is plenty of tourist actvities to do but we just opted for the Stockmans Hall of Fame and the Qantas Museum. We enjoyed both.

The park we stayed in was huge. There was a Woolshed restaurant - good meals. Cant say that for their red wine selection though. For our mates that are traveling behind us its open 6 nights a week. Not open Tuesday but they have a free sausage sizzle that night and the bar is open.

Leaving Longreach we endured another 50km of massive road kill - at least the majority had been removed from the road when we came through.

Next stop Winton. We visited the Waltzing Matilda centre. Very interesting. I should have listened more at school - I now know more about Banjo Paterson.

After 3 days of museums and history we needed some light relief so we headed off to the musical fence in Winton. Robin found here niche playing the Honda bike petrol tank. For me it was the drums. The instructions for the fence were there to play Waltzing Matilda. After multiple attempts I recognised a few notes. More practice needed but time did not allow.

We moved on and free camped between Winton and Kyuna. We were just at a road stop with 3 other caravans and a road train. No phone, internet or TV reception. We found a rado station.

Thanks for your various enquiries re the weather. We are ahead of the rain - it has not come this far west. The only shower we had was from a road train carrying cattle. If you thought the road kill on the under carriage was bad - you should see the car and caravan now. I will be recycling all our grey water to clean the van done. Cant take the hose to it like home.

I have attched some photos from the last few days.

After several days of a dotted white line, straight roads and mirages offering a tropical oasis we then traveled from Cloncurry to Mt Isa where the terrain was undulating, more trees and double lines with overtaking lanes. Hadn't seen that for days. We are now at Mt Isa for the weekend and plan to be in Alice Springs late next week.

Thanks for checking on us, we are amazed at how many hits the site has had.

Cheers Di and Robin
