Rich’s Travel Diary

Location: Siberia, Russia

MapAt Moscow, we caught a trans-siberian train to Irkutsk in Siberia which took 3 days and 4 nights. It sounds a long time but it shot by - what with reading, eating, staring out the window (mainly at trees), meeting other westerners in the food carriage, and generally chilling out. We loved it and were a bit gutted when we arrived at Irkutsk which meant the loafing had to stop. Near Irkutsk there is a huge lake called Lake Baikal which we went and stayed at for a few days. It contains 20% of the worlds fresh water, is hundreds of kms long and is absolutely freezing! The scenery around it is amazing so we spent a lot of time going on walks, getting chased by half wolf, half dogs and being eaten alive by thousands of vicious insects. The fish there was fantastic though - they had a fish called Omul which they smoked and tasted similar to smoked Salmon except you had thick chunks of the fish meat. Rich ate it for every meal he had while we stayed at the lake.
