Rich’s Travel Diary

Location: South Island Part 2, New Zealand

MapAfter Christmas at Milford Sound, we head over to the Catlins, an area in the South East of the South Island. Here we stayed in a farm hostel where Sheena got to feed the lambs milk and we got a tour of the farm from the back of a pickup truck. We also got chased down a beach by a mad sea lion and watched the yellow eyed penguins surfing on to the beach after a days fishing.
Next up it was New Year in Dunedin (a city with a strong Scottish influence) where we went on a Speights brewery tour where we sampled some (rich sampled all) of the breweries beer. Then we headed into the Octagon for the New Years evening, spending most of the night in a pub called the Flying Scotsman.
We then visited Queenstown for a couple of days, but the weather was awful which prevented us from doing any activities - Rich did manage to squeeze in a Lord of the Rings tour up on one of the mountains. We headed on to Mt Cook (well we thought it was Mt Cook) but the weather here was awful as well. We managed to fit in a couple of walks but got absolutely drenched - and we never actually saw the mountain due to the clouds.
From here we headed over to Christchurch, via a quick stop at Lake Tekapo, and spent a couple of days looking around the city. On from Christchurch, we stayed at Akaroa, a really nice little seaside town. Here we went on a kayaking trip in one of the bays, where the hector dolphins live. There was loads of small pods of these dolphins around and they were in a really playful mood, swimming alongside the kayaks and surfacing right beside us - it was a really magical experience and we were all left with big grins on our faces.
