Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

MapMy hectic 2 weeks in KL have finally come to a close. And not a moment too soon; I’m not sure how much more my liver can take!

Training itself was generally uninspiring, but that was more than countered for by the hotel, the food and of course the after hours activities.

We have been lucky enough to be staying at the Sheraton Imperial in the centre of KL. Only a stone’s throw away from the monorail, Petronas Towers, shopping, and a nice row of bars & clubs which needless to say we patronized on more than one occasion. Putin was actually staying here during our first week as part of the ASEAN summit – plenty of red carpet, metal detectors and big burly Russian body guards to be seen.

As you’ve probably heard, I was on the wrong end of a beer glass during an ill-fated Terry Tate reenactment in one of the above said bar incidents. No lasting damage done, but I did score a couple of stitches for my trouble (see photos).

On the middle weekend, 6 of us (4 Aussies, a Kiwi and a Yank) hired a people-mover and drove up to Pulau Pangkor – a small island on the west coast. It was a fairly hair-raising journey on Malaysian roads where people don’t pay attention to silly things such as “speed limits” and “double lines”. Nice beaches, great seafood and we stayed with the Malaysian equivalent of Bob Marley!

Managed to catch up for a beer with a couple of the group leaders from Nepal – Chris Ziebell and Amy Neville. Chris had actually just spent a month in Borneo leading a group, so he was able to give me the low-down on things to do.

Lauren arrived on Wednesday morning and has been making the most of KL’s shopping. We managed to sneak into the Accenture office on the 66th floor of Petronas Towers. Best view in KL.

We fly out to Kuching this afternoon to meet up with dad. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Not sure where we will be yet, but will try to write again soon.
