Location: Picton, New Zealand

MapGoing South

After crossing the Cook Straight our first stop in the South Island was Picton, in the heart of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. For some reason not many people choose to stay here, but as we have plenty of time on ours hands we decided to stop a couple of nights. The main attraction in the area is the Queen Charlotte Track, a 71km trek which usually takes 3-4 days. We thought that this was a little beyond us, so we opted to do the first 15km. A boat took us out to the starting point, Ship Cove. From here we walked through lush coastal forest taking in the amazing scenery, which looked even better in the glorious sunshine. Along the way we stopped off at various lookouts mainly to have a quick rest. The walk was easier than we both expected and definately worth the extra stop in Picton.
