A quick visit to Copan

Location: Copan, Honduras

From Antigua in Guatemala we thought we might as well do a quick detour down to the Mayan ruins in Copan Honduras, and then try and work our way back into Guatemala by the coastal route.

Whilst Palenque had grand pyramids, this place is more known for its rock carvings like this known as stelae.

The ruins of Copan are another Mayan ruin which sit just across the Honduran border. They´re similar to Palenque in that they are set in a dense humid jungle country.

The back of the ball court.

The place also has a ball court which was a game the Mayans played where the winer was said to be sacrificed - apparently that is a good thing as to be sacrificed was revered!

More stelae.

Nice arch construction.

The pyramids have a number of caves underneath but you can only get access to two although it costs more to get in...less if you speak to the guards nicely!

The forrest has no respect, but features like this kinda make you feel like you are seeing it as it was found - overgrown.

Great detail on the outside stelae.

Hard to take good photos in the tunnels, but the walls have a series of stucco features including this mask which are original and in good condition.

Back on the Guatemalan side and another chicken bus but this time with a one eyed driver and reggaeton blasting out of the stereo speakers right above our heads - this bus taking us from a road intersection after the border to (almost!) Rio Dulce.

The chicken bus that took us from Omoa to the Honduran border with a relieved Jodes having escaped the clutches of a drunk baggage assistant at 8am in the morning!
