Merida and Uxmal

Location: Merida, Mexico

Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state, is a nice colonial city with friendly people and nearby Mayan ruins of Uxmal...but it is hot, damn hot!

Impressive colonial interiors as well.

Colonial buildings are all over the place in the old historical central district.

One of the old buildings had some interesting art. The style was old serious (faded and flakey) but then the artist graffities over the top - hard to see it here but the guy sitting has a tail drawn in red and devils ears.

The old Cathedral originally built about 500 years ago using stone from Mayan temples / buildings which the Spainards dismantled - a similar storey to the Incas in Cusco, Peru.

The Sorceror's Temple in the sorrounding jungle - it differs to other pyramids we have seen with its rounded sides/edges.

35m Temple of the Sorceror at Uxmal - built around 1000 years ago, but we suspect heavily restored.

The Governors Palace with more intricate stone carvings on the facade.
