Tongariro Crossing

Location: Taupo, New Zealand

Welcome to Lord of the Rings country!! We took a stroll through middle earth. This was supposed to be a 7-8 hour hike and we did this puppy in just under 6...yahoo!

This is the crater we found after the first leg of the hike.

A misty beginning... you could see the lava rocks path down the mountain from the numerous eruptions of the surrounding volcanos.

Our first snow sighting in months!

Almost there... yes those are clouds.

Brrrr!! We made it to the peak of the moutnain 2000 feet up! The temperature up here was -5!

A lake that is in the crater of yet another volcano.

The path to the top of Mount Tongariro.

The colors on this hike were amazing and would change in a blink from turquoise blue to blood red to black rock-like nothing we have ever seen.

Our buddy did the hike in a little nicer weather... the emerald lakes in the sunshine.

On our way back down the mountain... rocky terrain. easier on our lungs but harder on our knees.

We walked next to a stream with many waterfalls for about 1/4 of the way up.

Another sunny photo of the blue lake- 1800 feet up!
