Antarctica 2

Location: Ushuaia, Argentina

31 Dec 2006, 7:46AM

What a day this was. After a pair of humpback whales were spotted from the boat, we all took off in zodiacs and cruised the bay (with engines turned off) whilst we waited for the humpbacks to appear. Must have taken 50 shots but this was the best one. Adding to the experience was that this was in the middle of an extinct ancient volcano and we were surrounded by sheer cliffs. For those who have been to Santorini its a similar thing but with whales - awesome. We were like excited kids at Xmas time whenever a whale appeared. Narelle had a similar pic but hers had the water running off the end of the tail - what a beauty!

This was taken from the zodiac whilst we were parked next to the iceberg. Wasnt until I saw the pic that I noticed the background of the island full of nesting penguins.

Not a bad screensaver eh?.

Taken at Bailey Head. As I lay on the ground a heap of penguins surrounded me and walked past me. Note: I didn't need to use the zoom for this photo. These guys were less than a metre away from me.

Penguin Idol.

This was the day we landed on fast ice - which is essentially sea water which has frozen quickly. Landings on the ice are quite rare so we got lucky on this day. Both of us are just pretending to be red-jacketed seals

(Pic by NoZ) Some of us getting on a zodiac. On this mornign the seas were pretty rough - it was great fun sitting up the front whilst we rode the waves.

Obligatory cute shot of penguin on top of iceberg.

Last drinks in Buenos Aires with Shep (Karen) and Noz (Narelle) - 2 great Melbourne girls we met on the boat. This is at Unico a great bar in Palermo, BA - the girls are about to board the flight back home. We had another 2 weeks of fun in Argentina
