Vatican City

Location: Vatican City, Vatican

The Basilica of St Peter and the Sistine Chapel blew us out of the water on our day in the smallest country in the world.

One of the several gorgeous fountains in the Piazza

Looking out from the steps of St Peter's Basilica

No these aren't the local court jesters....they are highly trained, genetically superior (!!) members of the elite Swiss Guard. A criteria is that they have to be good-looking!

The line to get in to the church was long, but NOTHING like the couple of kms worth to get into the museum. We cleverly avoided that one

The Pope's balcony (??) for want of the correct term...

Braving the heat for this necessary shot out the front of the basilica

The dome of St Peter's Basilica - 13m smaller than the Pantheon to respect the Romans, but big enough to fit the entire Statue of Liberty inside it with 90 feet to spare! Massive. Those letters are 8 foot high...

Michelangelo's Pieta; this stunning sculpture of Mary holding her dead son is behind bullet proof glass due to an act of vandalism. The only work Michelangelo autographed

And somehow our camera accidentally went off again (no flash of course) to capture this famous segment of Michelangelo's ceiling fresco

The altar wall of the Sistine Chapel....ssssshhh, no photos allowed...

A part of the Stanze di Rafaello - he frescoed these private apartments within what is now the Vatican Museum

One of many lavishly decorated corridors within the Vatican Museum
