Kuangsi waterfalls

Location: Kuangsi waterfalls, Laos

We drove some miles west of Luang Prabang to get to these waterfalls, stopping off at various points of interest en route.

The food is always fresh

The locals market on the edge of Luang Prabang

Many of the children are dressed in the Hmong ethnic costume and spend their days selling to tourists.

We stopped at a Hmong community village. The school here is very basic indeed.

The houses are made of bamboo and palm leaves. They have to be replaced every three years and then the whole village turns out to help.

Everything is 'one dollar'

The Kuangsi waterfalls were a picturesque series of crystal clear cascades, some of which were used for swimming.

The Bear Rescue Centre is a charitable organisation which was set upto rescue asiatic black bears from the cruelty of illegal wild life trade

Ock PopTok, east meets west, a centre for the Akha women from the Phongsaly province to train them in traditional artisanal skills which they can take back and use to benefit their home villages . The work here was expensive and of high quality.

The head of the falls

Dinner was at the Dylen Sabai restaurant, set in a tropical garden on the banks of the river. we did our own cooking on a sort of fondue

The tuk tuk ride to dinner
