Palestine page 10

Location: Bethlehem, Palestine

Bethlehem

View of the town of Bethlehem. A lot of money has been put into Jerusalem but not so in Palestine. It is much poorer.

This is the best view I could get from the bus of the signs at the entrances to roads in to Palestine but you can still get the message Basically, any Israeli caught on these roads will be shot!

One of the murals inside the circular chapel depicting the story.

The Church of the Shepherd built on the site where it is believed the shepherds saw the Angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Jesus. A strangely moving place.

The shrine of the birthplace was just a small spot. Hard to believe that queues to view this could be seven hours long.

The Church of the Nativity built over the grotto where it is believed that Mary gave birth to Jesus.

..I managed to get some sort of photograph of inside the grill,of some decoration marking the rocky manger.

The grill round the manger obscured the rock manger behind it but you can just see a hand touching the holy site.

Inside the Church is the order of the silent nun ....this is their chapel showing the symbol of peace.

The Church of the Milk Grotto built over the cave where infertile women went to get the dust which when mixed with food would make them fertile. This was by contrast such a serene place.

Star Street which is also a World Heritage Site. This street has been built on the believed path of the star guiding the shepherds and the magi, to the manger. It is not known how many magi there were, one or many.

Manger Square is a World Heritage Site. At Christmas celebrations last over a month here.
