Page 7 Monte Albane'

Location: Oaxaca, Central America

Spectacularly situated at the top of a mountain overlooking Oaxaca Valley.

By 800 AD the site had been generally abandoned and it is not known why this happened.

The vast complex of Monte Albane was said to be the greatest of the Zapotec cities. A triumph of engineering as the mountain top was levelled in order to create the ceremonial site.

Broad steep staircases lead up to the ceremonial tops

The temples were in alignment with the heavenly bodies.

..inside were the most intricate remarkably preserved glyphs on the walls.

.......

.....

...said to be depictions of dancers

The silk cotton tree

The ball court....a game played with a rubber ball hit from the hip...it cannot be confirmed whether it is the winner or loser who is to be sacrificed.

The vast square said to be the public space for markets and performances for example.
