Berlin -August 2014
Location: Berlin, GermanyWhere do you start, the moment you get off the plane its familiar: is Budapest? Romania? Prague? Havana even? None of the above but with the Eastern European Concrete thing, The weeds & Graffiti you could be in any of those cities but Berlin is Very Very special.
Ignore tourist places, drink in the little downstairs pubs like "Fire" a video of a fireplace plays merrily as you listen to great Blues and drink Bier at 2.50/ 500 mls.
Buy chocolate in a shop with tiny lights, reminded me of a chaps front room. Visit the Ramones Museum & have a beer for Joey. Visit the brilliant Flea markets on a Sunday morning, where kids are still on night before time, crazy cafe with "Locals" playing chess noisily & Markets that sell everything you don't want & nothing you want. An Irish pub called the Oscar Wilde where you make instant friends with 2 chaps from Birmingham who are still happy from seeing a Soccer game the day before.
After discovering the local Indians have nothing in common with your taste buy your way out of their beer & complimentary Poppadoms & find a Pizzeria where they speak no Italian & yet apparently I was speaking passable Italian!
This is a truly wonderful city, the locals are amazing & if I had had the time to start exploring the Turkish cuisine I would truly be a happy man.
