Feliz Ano Novo!!! (Happy New Year)

We went out to dinner last night at a beautiful restaurant and saw the new year in with a group of Jose's friends. It was on the beach and when the new year officially came in the fireworks started so it was nice to see them over the water as the waves crashed in. They have a tradition in Portugal where you eat 12 sultanas at midnight. Not sure why but you just do.

What else is really unusual here but quite a nice custom and very European is when you meet someone you kiss them twice - once on each cheek....and not the bum ones either!! More so with the women, the men mostly hug. So we kissed and hugged a lot of people last night!!

The Portuguese smoke...a lot! They smoke in restaurants, shopping centres, toilets, petrol stations - you name it and they smoke there. However with the new year has come stricter laws in relation to this and let me tell you the Portuguese are not impressed by this. So the only negative comment I can say about Portugal up until today is wherever you left, you smelt like an ashtray but not anymore!!

Portugal is beautiful and has a nice vibe about it. You should all try and come here one day as it is well worth the visit.

So here is an update since Christmas.

Although we missed everyone Christmas Day was really good. We bought a stack of food the day before and cooked some roast vegetables and Tarquin and Shan had some ham so our Christmas dinner was mighty dishes either because we shouted ourselves to paper plates!! We had loads of nuts and chocolates as well as an assortment of cheeses I stole from the hotel we were staying at.....nice one!!! We felt like right little puddings by the end of the day.

On Boxing Day we headed to Dublin...just to get out of Belfast. Basically we had a couple of drinks at the Temple Bar and came home as nothing was open. Nice 3-hour bus ride though. We spent the rest of our time in Belfast just drinking, eating and hanging out which was kind of cool. Nice to not play tourist too much for a few days.

So we arrived in Portugal today. We were glad to see the back of Belfast but it was really sad to say good-bye to Shan again (sniff sniff) but it looks as though she will be coming home next year some time which will be excellent.

When we got off the plane today we headed straight to the Western most point of Portugal (and Europe) and just soaked up the sun and the beautiful coast line. Although there has been little rain on our trip there has been very little sunshine so we were loving our vitamin D fix. Jose is trying to convince Tarquin to go for a surf while we are here. Good luck with that!! It is still quite cold despite the sunshine but the warmest so far since we left Brisvegas.

Well we are off now to go and have some dinner. Hope you are all well. What is everyone doing for New Year´s Eve?

See you all in a week or so.

It was touch and go for awhile but we finally have accommodation booked for Christmas....Ho Ho Ho Bloody Expensive Ho!!

Thursday, 13 December 2007

Location: Cardiff, Wales

So we are in Cardiff and what a lovely friendly town it is. Yesterday we took a short stroll to Cardiff Castle which was really impressive. We are finding the good thing about travelling in the winter is that no one else is stupid enough to and so all the tours we are doing, we are virtually the only people on them. So yesterday at the castle we had a fully guided tour by ourselves which was kind of more ways than one let me tell you!!

Wales is really getting into the Christmas spirit with nice decorations and a winter christmas carnival which includes a mighty big ice skating rink and ferris wheel. We took a ride on the ferris wheel and admittedly we were both feeling mighty uneasy over the height we reached. Legs were a bit shaky when we got off!! Great views of Cardiff though.

Today we left Cardiff and headed back to England on a day trip to Bath and Stonehenge. Everyone should make the trip to the Roman Baths, they really are phenomonal. The Stonehenge rocks are everyrhing you see in the pictures.....bloody big rocks. You don't need to spend long there as they are in the middle of a big empty field so there is nothing else there to see. Still interesting though...if you're into big rocks which nobody can explain.

We are spending one more day in Cardiff and then off to Edinburgh...we hope!! Just trying to finalise all that now.

Big hugs to you all.

Location: London, UK

Hey everyone,
We made it to London and are looking forward to leaving already. Our hotel is so disgusting, nothing like it was advertised on the internet. We arrived and they let us in the room which had supposedly been cleaned and there were cigarettes and dirty cups in our non-smoking room. We have our own bathroom but the toilet is one of those wooden ones and it has all begun to chip away. Thank god for those hep shots hey???

On the bright side or should I say Brighton side we did a day trip said place. Not much happening out there in the winter but it is a really nice beachside town and it was amazingly a beautiful day, blue sky and all!!!

Last night we went to Picadally Circus and saw Phantom of the Opera at Her the old girl didn't invite us to her palace that was the name of the theatre. It was a really wonderul experience, one I will certainly remember for a long time to come.

We are heading to Cardiff tomorrow to spend a couple of days. We are going to do a day trip out to Bath and Stonehenge...we had originally planned to do this from London but this place really is a little depressing. I am sure it would be wonderful if you had a local to tell you this that and the other but it just isn't for us.

Hope you are all well and staying cool...I KNOW WE ARE!!

Off to the airport now and still no snow!! Fingers crossed we will come across some in the UK.
We are heading to Notting Hill to spend a few days in London. Steve has given us a long list of pubs to visit so the next entry should be interesting. Hopefully we can get some pictures up on to the site in London and give you a breakdown of our last 8 days. Sweden has been fantastic.

Hi all,
We are both well and having a great time but having difficulties accessing the internet. So when we get more of a chance we will fill you in on what we have been doing.

Still no snow and doesn't look as though we are going to see any here in Sweden. They are predicting it next week...after we go. We are off to London on Monday and will be back in touch then, hopefully with more of an opportunity to tell you more.

Until then love to you all!

We will try and put some pictures up tomorrow of some of the things we have been seeing. Still no snow....sigh. I keep checking every five minutes though. I was even walking around in thongs earlier as I thought I would play mind games with the weather.

Love to you all.

Location: London Airport, England

Hi all,
It is 8:30 am and we are now as far as London and are kicking back in the Qantas/British Airways Lounge. Is it wrong to have alcohol for breaksfast if it is free??

We are feeling pretty tired as you really can't sleep with the amount of crappy space they give you. I keep telling Tarquin we might have been upgraded if he hadn't worn his Guns n' Roses T-shirt with all the skulls on it - of all the times to choose to be a bevan!!

Off to Sweden shortly. Will let you know when we have arrived.

Take care now.

Tarquin Good to hear from you .
All is well here, still raining but the wind has eased a bit , cool conditions , no swimming in the pool yet . The weather forcast for the next week is for more rain. The wind has started up again forget what I stated earlier about the fact that it had eased.
We drove past your home the other day all looks well.
Your father and I are taking Shayna to the hospital today 2/1/2008 for her MRI scan .
We are determined to walk 10,000 steps a day and trim down by at least 10kgs But where do you walk in the rain ? I guess we will have to go to the shopping centres your father will like that !(not)
Your father sends his love
Tarquin do you still want me to pick you up from the airport on Sunday morning ?
I am available and willing to do so .
Take care
Love always Mum
Response: Thanks but Kelly's mum is picking us up but I will call when I get home and let you know I have arrived safely. Will catch up with you on Sunday sometime though. Off to do some last minute sight seeing now.

Hey you two. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! I am late shift 31st and early shift 1st so I guess we will do the usual and go to bed early. The weather here is pretty bad with very strong winds and lots of rain so most of the outdoor entertainment has been cancelled including the fireworks. Shame for people who have booked things and those going to enjoy the outdoors, but there you go thats nature for you. You guys are probably having better weather where you are so I hope you have a really good night, just don't party too hard and keep your wits about you.(sorry that's the mother in me) and I am sure Tarquins mum agrees so there!! Hope to hear from you soon, so as usual lots of love and come home safe and forget the resolutions they just don't work.
Bye from us all at the Hicks household XXXXX
